At just five years old, Hadija’s world was defined by fear. Growing up in Burundi, she witnessed repeated violence against her mother a reality no child should endure. When the abuse escalated, her mother fled to Tanzania, carrying little Hadija in search of safety. But instead of finding protection, Hadija entered another cycle of pain. In their new home, both her mother and stepfather subjected her to severe physical abuse, leaving visible scars on her small frame.
Everything changed when concerned neighbours reported the violence to the Social Welfare Office, triggering a lifesaving intervention supported by IOM Tanzania and government protection actors. Hadija was immediately transferred to the WoteSawa Safe House, where she received medical care, psychosocial counselling, and a nurturing environment that honoured her dignity. Slowly through patience, therapy, and child‑friendly support she began to smile again
Understanding that true healing required long‑term stability, IOM Tanzania worked hand‑in‑hand with IOM Burundi and child protection authorities to initiate cross‑border family tracing, demonstrating the UN “Delivering as One” approach. Their coordinated efforts led to the successful identification of Hadija’s aunt in Burundi, assessed as a safe and loving caregiver. With the support of the Kigoma Joint Programme, Hadija was safely repatriated and reunited with her aunt, who welcomed her with warmth and renewed hope.
To ensure a dignified fresh start, Hadija received school supplies to begin her education immediately, while her aunt was supported to expand her small business strengthening household resilience and contributing to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work). Today, Hadija is thriving attending school, playing freely, and growing up in an environment filled with safety and love.
Her journey is a powerful reminder of how timely intervention, strong government partnership, and cross‑border collaboration can restore a child’s future advancing SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions).
