In the turquoise waters of East Africa, Zanzibar, known for its history and spices, is venturing into the digital era with collaboration and ambition. UNDP Accelerator Labs in Tanzania and UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, alongside UNICEF Zanzibar and the State University of Zanzibar, are jointly shaping Zanzibar's digital future through a Digital Readiness Assessment.
The initiative commenced with a dynamic stakeholder workshop, bringing together government officials, entrepreneurs, educators, and civil society to chart the path for Zanzibar's digital inclusivity. The assessment focuses on Zanzibar's green (renewable energy, sustainable farming, eco-friendly construction) and blue (fishing, coastal tourism, marine biotech) sectors.
The assessment serves two purposes: recognizing the importance of digital transformation without neglecting environmental challenges and ensuring equitable access for the most vulnerable. The approach blends quantitative questionnaires with group discussions to gauge Zanzibar's readiness for the digital age.
Ms. Laxmi Bhawani, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Zanzibar, underlines the essence of digital readiness, stating, "It's about molding a digital landscape where every child, every individual, finds their place and purpose.”
Prof. Mohamed Makame, Vice Chancellor of the State University of Zanzibar, emphasizes the potential of this digital wave for education, research, and societal engagement.
The workshop yielded a common vision: using digital technology as a catalyst for a sustainable, inclusive Zanzibar. Discussions revolved around enhancing digital literacy, fostering entrepreneurship, and eco-conscious tech solutions. Accessibility to digital tools for remote areas and people with disabilities became a unanimous call.
Zanzibar's strides in digital inclusivity and sustainability set a standard for nations grappling with rapid digital transformation. The Digital Readiness Assessment, with international and local agency collaboration, spotlights Zanzibar's path to pioneer this digital evolution. Unity in vision and action in the digital age becomes evident.
As we await the final report, one thing remains clear: Zanzibar isn't just writing its digital chapter; it's inspiring others to follow suit. Let's champion their vision and join as global stakeholders in shaping a tech-driven, heart-centered future.
