Women's care and domestic work responsibilities, both unpaid and paid, are key issues for women's empowerment. According to the Tanzania Household Budget Survey (2017-18), women in the country spend 4.4 hours per day on unpaid care and domestic work, compared to 1.4 hours daily for men.
To address the disproportionate care burden on women and girls, UN Women in Tanzania is implementing three key programs aimed at increasing the voices of women in decision-making structures while enhancing their economic rights through addressing women and girls’ disproportionate care burden by working closely with the government and other key agents of change at the local level.

To achieve gender equality, it is essential to ensure a more equitable distribution of care and domestic responsibilities so that women and girls can equally benefit from economic and social opportunities.
