Voices from the Field 2025 | KJP Special Edition
The Kigoma Joint Programme (KJP) Phase II reflects a unified UN approach to addressing multidimensional vulnerabilities in one of Tanzania’s most complex regions. Building on ongoing humanitarian and development efforts, it adopts an integrated, area-based model that tackles the root causes of poverty, fragility, and insecurity while strengthening resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
Anchored in the New Way of Working, the programme links humanitarian and development action to deliver long-term, collective outcomes. This ensures immediate needs are met while also advancing durable solutions for refugees, host communities, and local institutions through stronger systems and improved service delivery.
Across sectors, results demonstrate the impact of this coordinated approach. In health, investments in infrastructure and capacity have reduced maternal mortality, improved diagnostics, and strengthened emergency preparedness. Nutrition and school feeding programmes continue to improve child health and learning outcomes.
In education and protection, thousands of out-of-school children are being reintegrated, while community initiatives are helping prevent gender-based violence and trafficking. Survivor-centred services, including One Stop Centres, are expanding access to recovery and justice.
Livelihoods support is increasing productivity and incomes, especially for women and youth, through skills development, improved technologies, and better market access. Digital literacy and cross-border trade initiatives are further expanding economic opportunities.
Climate resilience efforts, including renewable energy, bio-briquettes, and solar-powered health facilities, are reducing environmental pressure while improving access to clean energy and services.
At the governance level, legal aid and awareness programmes are strengthening access to justice and building trust in institutions.
Together, these interventions are contributing to greater stability, resilience, and inclusive development in Kigoma, demonstrating the value of coordinated UN action in delivering lasting impact.
