Industrial development and environmental conservation for Sustainable Development
Every October 24, the United Nations celebrates its establishment. The United Nations System in Tanzania in partnership with the Government, development partners and youth marked the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in style.
This year the United Nations in Tanzania in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation celebrated UN Day at Karimjee grounds in Dar es Salaam under the theme “Industrialization and Environmental conservation for Sustainable Development”. Zanzibar UN Day celebrations will be marked on the 26th of October.
This year’s celebrations highlighted the continued partnership between the government and the United Nations. Speaking at the event, the Guest of Honor, the Vice President, H. E Samia Hassan Suluhu commended the UN for their continued support to the development of Tanzania. She stated,
“The theme for this year’s anniversary, Industrial Development and Environmental Conservation for Sustainable Development, is in line with the Tanzania Development Vision 2025 and the Second Phase of the Five-Year Development Plan 2016/2017-2020/2021, which aspires to drive Tanzania to an industrial economy by 2025.
Speaking to journalists, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez highlighted the achievements made under Phase I of the United Nations Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP I - 2011 to 2016) to the Government of Tanzania; and the implementation of the five-year Phase II of the United Nations Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP II - 2016 to 2021) that includes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as designed and endorsed by the international community.
Mr. Rodriguez also spoke about the Kigoma Joint Programme, which is currently supported by Norway and KOICA and was specially designed for Kigoma Region for implementation in three districts of Kasulu, Kibondo and Kakonko.
Speaking during the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations and how it relates to Tanzania, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, said:
“Tanzania and the United Nations have enjoyed good partnership for many decades. As Tanzania is undergoing massive transformation, the United Nations’ assistance must meet new requirements, particularly at this crucial juncture of its transformation to becoming a middle-income country”. He added: “The sustainable development goals provide a roadmap for the United Nations operations in Tanzania.”

This year marks the 2nd year of the implementation of UNDAP II and the focus is on the SDGs, environmental protection and industrialization, and the recently-launched area-based programming for Kigoma, ‘the Kigoma Joint Programme’ which will be implemented between 2016 – 2021 in three districts (Kasulu, Kibondo and Kakonko) focusing on host Tanzanian communities.
This year also saw the UN partner with the private sector through Fursa to reach out to youth across the country with different messages from UN Agencies on priority SDGs in Tanzania.
