Good evening!
It is a great pleasure to be here today at the Business SDG Awards, organized by the Global Compact Network Tanzania (GCNT). As we gather here today, it is essential to acknowledge the significance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of recognizing the efforts of businesses and organizations in advancing them.
Adopted by 193 countries in September 2015, the SDGs outline a framework for a better global future by 2030. The SDG framework provides a roadmap for businesses to take action on some of the most pressing issues confronting our world in the pursuit of a more prosperous, inclusive and peaceful world.
It is encouraging to see that businesses around the world are contributing to achievement of the SDGs. In fact, according to the United Nations Global Compact, 93% of CEOs surveyed believe that sustainability is important to the future success of their business. Over 12,000 companies have signed on to the Global Compact and committed to its principles.
I am told that according to KPMG, more than 2,500 companies now include the SDGs in their annual sustainability reports. It is estimated that the SDGs represent a $12 trillion market opportunity that could create 380 million jobs.
Distinguished Guests,
Tanzania has made notable progress towards achieving the SDGs, with improvements in health, education, and gender equality. However, there is still much work to be done to achieve these goals by 2030.
In Tanzania, the Global Compact Network is advancing the SDGs. They have been working with businesses and organizations to create sustainable business practices that support environmental protection, economic development, and social well-being. Through their efforts, the Global Compact Network has demonstrated that sustainable business practices can lead to economic growth and social development.
The Business SDGs Awards recognizes businesses and organizations that are leading the way in advancing the SDGs. I am delighted to see so many businesses and organizations present here today, all committed to making a positive impact on society and the environment.
It is worth noting that in Tanzania, businesses and organizations are making major strides towards achieving the SDGs. For instance, the private sector has played a vital role in the country's economic growth and poverty reduction. The business community has created employment opportunities, promoted local industries, and contributed to the country's GDP.
However, despite these positive developments, the country is still grappling with several challenges. One of the most significant challenges is climate change, which is affecting agricultural production, water resources, and food security.
I hope these awards will not only recognize and encourage the winners, they will catalyze the entire business community to rapidly adopt the SDGs in their business strategies with transparent and accountable approaches.
We must work together to find sustainable solutions to these challenges. The UN stands ready to support you in the rapid adoption of the SDGs.
Distinguished Guests,
I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the Global Compact Network Tanzania for organizing this event, and for their commitment towards promoting sustainable development in Tanzania.
Let me close by commending the businesses represented here today for your commitment to sustainability. Sustainability is not only good for the planet and its people but also good for your businesses and their long-term successes. Let us continue to work together towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
