UN and the Government of Tanzania Launch $1.3 billion Development Plan

Today the United Nations system in Tanzania, in collaboration with the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, launched its second five-year Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP II), which will cover the period July 2016 to June 2021 and called on all stakeholders to support its implementation. UNDAP II focuses on the key national priorities highlighted in the government’s National Five Year Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with particular focus on the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach citizens. The plan focuses on four interrelated thematic areas, namely Inclusive Growth, a Healthy Nation, Resilience, and Democratic Governance, Human Rights and Gender. This five-year programme will require resources of about $1.3 billion which is equivalent to Sh2.8 trillion.

Speaking at the launch, which was held at Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, the UN Resident Coordinator in Tanzania, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, stated that the UNDAP II motto is “narrowing the gap to leave no one behind” as “every citizen in Tanzania and every person in the world should be able to aspire to reach their full potential as called for by the Global Goals. “To ensure the successful implementation of UNDAP II, we require the support of everyone. The government will help lead and guide us and ensure we are joined up with its own efforts. With development partners, we hope to enhance further our joint-efforts and with their support achieve shared development objectives. With communities, we hope to ensure that the values embodied in the Global Goals are a reality for all. In this way, we can make a real contribution to Tanzania.” Mr. Rodriguez added.

Guest of honor of the joint-event Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Professor Sifuni Mchome who was speaking on behalf of Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mr. Servacius Likwelile, said that “UNDAP II…provides an important single approach to the way the UN supports and contributes to the achievement of the national priorities and international commitments with the view of enhancing the effectiveness of the UN support and consequently improving social services delivery and reducing poverty to the majority.”
