Ireland pledges Euro 3.85 million to advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Tanzania

The Embassy of Ireland in partnership with the United Nations in Tanzania is proud to announce a major boost to the Tanzania SDG Acceleration Fund with a contribution of €3.85 million (approximately TZS 10.47 billion). This marks Ireland’s first donation to the new initiative and is a significant step in our shared journey towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Tanzania SDG Acceleration Fund, which kicked off earlier this year, is a joint effort by the UN and the Tanzanian Government. This unique fund was established to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for Tanzania from 2022 to 2027. The UNSDCF is all about reducing poverty in all its forms in Tanzania and paving the way for sustainable, inclusive and greener economic development, all while focusing on the global SDGs and Tanzania’s national development priorities.

Ireland’s generous contribution is directed at supporting the combined efforts of UN programmes and initiatives that are set to benefit various areas of development under the UNSDCF. Ireland’s commitment aims to encourage integrated solutions by various UN entities active in Tanzania, including strategic interventions that help smallholder farmers, improve community-level health and nutrition, and increase women’s involvement in policymaking.

Ambassador of Ireland to Tanzania, H.E. Mary O’Neil shared, “Ireland has been working alongside the people of Kigoma for three decades. We've witnessed their challenges, resilience, and generosity. Our commitment is to be a part of building a resilient and prosperous future for Kigoma, with gender equality and women and girls' empowerment at the heart of our mission.” She further emphasized that unleashing women’s potential is crucial for economic growth and sustainable development. "We are enthusiastic about partnering with the Tanzanian Government and the UN system to achieve the SDGs."

The UN Resident Coordinator in Tanzania, Mr. Zlatan Milisic, expressed his gratitude towards Ireland for their continued support. He stated, "We are delighted to welcome Ireland to the new SDG Acceleration Fund. Ireland’s contribution significantly enhances our ability to deliver impactful results across various areas of our work in a more coordinated and coherent way."

This contribution signals the strengthening of the partnership between Ireland and the UN in Tanzania and showcases a united front in our shared commitment to helping Tanzania progress towards the SDGs, with a particular focus on leaving no one behind.
